Accomplishments of Laura Macias

You elected me to Mountain View City Council in 2004, and I served as your Mayor in 2007. Thank you. In my first term, I have stood up for Mountain View.

“Standing Up for Mountain View” Accomplishments:

  • I said YES and signed the Mayors’ Climate Change Initiative and encouraged forming the Citizens’ Environmental Task Force.
  • I said YES to the Child Care Center and supporting its subsidies for working and low-income families.
  • I said YES to promoting businesses in Mountain View, as Mayor hosting the first biotechnology forum with our Economic Development Department.
  • I said YES to keep our neighborhoods and schools safe. When a 2nd adult entertainment store wanted to open on El Camino, I pushed staff to look closely at the city ordinance, which prohibited an adult store within 1000 feet of a school.

  • My achievements prove that I produce real results. I know how to work with the City and how to move through the City’s processes to get things done.

  • On my initiative, the City’s Parks and Open Space Plan includes 3 acres of parks and open space per 1000 people — both as a city-wide goal and as a neighborhood planning goal. Result: new parks are being planned in the areas of most need.
  • Accepting my proposal, the Parks & Rec Commission now uses Rec In-Lieu fees to buy land for neighborhoods deficient in open space and parks (and not for general fund repayments and various repairs). Result: $250,000 contributed to buying land for Devonshire Park — and money available for more parks.
  • I’ve served as Board Director or Chair for local non-profits, including the Community Services Agency and the Support Network for Battered Women, improving clients’ lives while being responsible to our donors.
  • With a fellow Commissioner, I helped reinstate the Arbor Day/Week celebration in Mountain View. Result: for 8 years now Mountain View has celebrated Arbor Day/Week with many activities.
